Skinner’s Brewery team rider, Ben Skinner, has scooped the coveted cover of surfing aficionados’ bible, Carve Magazine.
Ben snagged the cover with an awesome shot of him riding the barrel at Porthleven, on one of his own Skin-Dog boards – the Slab Hunter. The day was especially significant for Ben as it was his 6 month old son Leven’s first visit to the beach – who was named after the world class break.
Ben, who is the Brewery founder Steve’s son, has fought hard to achieve the sought-after Carve cover. Ben was up against some heavy-weights of surfing for this particular edition, including surfing superstar Kelly Slater; whose shot came from Pipeline in Hawaii – a notorious surf reef break famous for generating big waves and incredible shots.
Ben said of this achievement: “Apart from competing, featuring on the cover of arguably one of the best surfing magazines internationally is a massive achievement for me. To get it in one of probably the best season’s for surfing too is amazing.”
“I’ve been pushing for a while to get the cover, riding some of the best waves with some of the best photographers – and I’m happy it’s paid off.”
The cover is especially significant for Skinner’s as it features home-grown talent, riding a home-grown wave – on a magazine which has seen some of the best waves and best surfers from around the world featured. Carve magazine described the shot of Ben as; “… probably the best water shot we have seen of Porthleven.”
Ben has been surfing since he was 3 years old – inspired by his dad – and is currently ranked number 3 in the world, is the British Champion, with 11 European Championships.
He also recently placed 3rd in the World Surf League (WSL) in China – the pinnacle in world championships -with his proud dad making the journey with him.
It’s easy to see why this incredible swell is the namesake of our untameable pale ale, Porthleven. As well as inspiring Ben’s cover-winning shot, the wild wave inspired our zesty ale. Click here for more information and details on where to purchase.
