We are proud to say that our tap house – The Old Ale House in Truro – was named CAMRA’s Kernow Pub of the Year 2017. Find out what makes this pub so great.
There are 600 pubs in the county of Cornwall. CAMRA members have visited every one and they keep a record of their tastings. That’s how CAMRA is able to boil down that 600 and to choose just 62 to feature in their Good Beer Guide. Of course, we’re always proud when The Old Ale House features in this guide – a regular occurrence over the last few years.
How is pub of the year decided?
The process of choosing Pub of the Year involves even more discernment and attention to fine ale and a great place to drink it in. A second call goes out to Cornish CAMRA members to nominate their favourite pubs. This boils down the 62 to just six. Things start to go undercover at this point – a secret panel of judges (dedicated volunteers who are committed to the mission of celebrating good beer) visit each of the six. They make their judgements mainly on beer quality, but also consider focus on service, the warmth of the welcome they receive, community focus and overall experience. There’s also a judgement around sympathies with CAMRA’s aims.
Manager Robin and the team at The Old Ale House clearly passed the inspection with flying colours. The Old Ale House was named CAMRA’s Kernow Pub of the Year 2017.
Credit where it’s due
At the party at the pub to celebrate this brilliant achievement, Bob Bunce, the Branch Chairman of CAMRA, said it was the quality of the ale (thanks!) and the warm welcome that is always waiting for customers at the Old Ale House that clinched the crown.
Modest Robin gave credit to his staff, the fantastic regulars and the great beer for support in making this landmark achievement.
Skinner’s head honcho, Steve, said he’d always loved The Old Ale House since he’d first visited it way back when. He said: “I am absolutely delighted for our exceptional Landlord, Robin Lawson, and all our dedicated team at the Old Ale House for winning such a prestigious award. A big thanks must also go to our customers and all the team at the brewery who do a tireless job of quality control at our brewery tap night after night!”
He dedicated the award to a recently deceased friend of the pub Terry Walker.
